Recent developments in our understanding of the role of the immune system in health and disease, as well as technical progress in therapeutic approaches, make it possible to reconsider how we might utilize the immune system more broadly to better human health. The ability to treat and, in some cases, cure cancer has helped advance similar thinking in the area of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases such that we can now think of a future in which a cure may be possible for some patients. The Lecture will briefly discuss the underpinnings of the science, the current state-of-the-art and the potential for future advancements.
