Subatomic Particles

For many thousands of years physicists assumed that atoms were the smallest building blocks of matter. But atoms are made up of even smaller particles, subatomic particles. In 1897 the British physicist Joseph John Thomson discovered the first of these particles, the electron, which orbits the nucleus. For this he received the Nobel Prize in 1906. Five years later, Rutherford discovered the nucleus and seven years after that, the proton, one of the particles that make up the core. The second subatomic particle, the neutron, was discovered in 1932 by James Chadwick. Both physicists also received the Nobel Prize. In experiments with electrons produced by radioactive decay, it seemed as if energy was being lost. In the thirties, the Austrian physicist Wolfgang Pauli postulated the existence of another subatomic particle, which is responsible for the loss of energy. He called these particles neutrinos. His theory was not proved until the fifties. Neutrinos are primarily produced by nuclear fusion in our sun, as the German physicist and Nobel laureate Rudolf Mößbauer explained in 1982 in Lindau: Thus, the fusion of protons, which includes the conversion of protons into neutrons, only works if there are neutrinos present. This means that our existence is ultimately dependent on the existence of neutrinos. So far, three types of neutrinos are known to exist: the electron neutrino, the muon neutrino and the tau neutrino. They have such a weak interaction with matter and so little mass that they can travel at the speed of light through anything. Every second, 60 billion neutrinos per square centimeter reach Earth from the sun. However, this solar power can not be fully measured. Mößbauer has an explanation: It could be that the neutrinos coming from the sun to us experience oscillations that they convert into other types of neutrinos, that the sun’s electron neutrinos are transformed into muon neutrinos and tau neutrinos and are then all mixed together. Therefore, only a third of the neutrino flow from the sun can be detected. Another very fundamental question was still unanswered at the beginning of the last century: What holds the nucleus together? Theoretical physicist Yukawa suggested in the thirties that it was a strong nuclear force and meson particles. The American Muray Gell-Mann explained exactly what a meson was, using the quark model in 1964, for which he received the 1969 Nobel Prize. According to this model there are three fundamental quark particles: the up, down and strange quark and their respective anti-particles. A meson is made up of a quark and an anti-quark. It holds together the protons and neutrons in their nuclei. These in turn are also made of quark particles. With the discovery of cosmic radiation by the Austrian Victor Franz Hess in the twenties, yet another elementary particle was found: the muon. A little later, physicists found more than 100 new subatomic particles during the first experiments with particle accelerators. They all follow the same periodic patterns. Physicists used these to develop the standard model. And so the building blocks of matter, their masses and the forces that hold them together set up a kind of physical Periodic Tables of Elements. But where do the particles get their mass? The symmetries of this model do not allow this. This led to a new theory, which the American Nobel laureate in physics, David Gross, explained in 2008 in Lindau. The Higgs mechanism is named after British physicist Peter Higgs. According to his theory, there is a field that gives matter its mass. Finding the associated particle, the Higgs-Boson, is essential, as the Dutch physicist and Nobel laureate Martinus Veltman said in 2010 in Lindau. The Standard Model is a complicated model in which the Higgs plays a role and it has to be there. That much you can deduce for sure. But on the other hand the common standard model is complicated as there is lots of particles with masses of which you have no idea why they are at that particular value, with forces in some balance but why we do not know. With the Large Hadron Collider at the European nuclear research center CERN near Geneva, scientists are searching for the so-called “god particle”. The most powerful particle accelerator in the world is an almost an energy output of up to 14 trillion electron volts. Long before the construction of the LHC, Nobel Laureate in Physics, Werner Heisenberg, welcomed such a European project in 1971 in Lindau: A large scientific project whose importance is recognized by all, but because of the high cost, which cannot be borne by a single European country, it represents an ideal case for true community work. Heisenberg was right. At CERN, scientists from all over the world now have first indications of the existence of the Higgs-Boson. Soon, they hope to be able to answer the question of the origin of the mass of elementary particles. Only then will the standard model of physics be complete and the interaction of the basic building blocks of matter be clarified.

Viele Jahrtausende haben Physiker angenommen, dass Atome die kleinsten Bausteine der Materie sind. Doch sie bestehen aus noch viel kleineren Partikeln, den subatomaren Teilchen. Im Jahre 1897 entdeckte der britische Physiker Joseph John Thomson das erste dieser Teilchen: das Elektron, das um den Atomkern kreist. Dafür erhielt er 1906 den Nobelpreis. Fünf Jahre später fand Rutherford den Atomkern und nach weiteren sieben Jahren das Proton, eines der Teilchen aus denen der Kern besteht. Das zweite, das Neutron, wurde 1932 von James Chadwick entdeckt. Die beiden Physiker bekamen ebenfalls den Nobelpreis. Bei Experimenten mit Elektronen, die durch radioaktiven Zerfall entstehen, schien es so, als würde Energie verloren gehen. In den 30er Jahren ging der österreichische Physiker Wolfgang Pauli deshalb von der Existenz eines weiteren subatomaren Teilchens aus, das für die fehlende Energie verantwortlich ist. Er nannte es Neutrino. Nachgewiesen wurde es erst in den Fünfziger Jahren. Neutrinos entstehen vor allem in Kernfusionsprozessen der Sonne, wie der deutsche Physiker und Nobelpreisträger Rudolf Mößbauer 1982 in Lindau erläuterte: So eine Verschmelzung von Protonen, die eine Umwandlung von Protonen in Neutronen beinhaltet, geht nur, wenn es Neutrinos gibt. Das heißt, unsere Existenz beruht also letzten Endes auf der Existenz von Neutrinos. Mittlerweile sind drei verschiedene Neutrinos bekannt: das Elektron-, Myon- und Tau-Neutrino. Sie haben eine so schwache Wechselwirkung mit der Materie und eine so geringe Masse, dass sie mit Lichtgeschwindigkeit überall hindurch fliegen können. Jede Sekunde erreichen 60 Milliarden Neutrinos pro Quadratzentimeter die Erde von der Sonne. Allerdings lässt sich dieser Solarstrom nicht vollständig messen. Mößbauer hat eine Erklärung dafür: Es könnte nämlich sein, dass die Neutrinos, die von der Sonne zu uns kommen Oszillationen machen, dass sie sich umwandeln in andere Arten von Neutrinos, dass die Elektroneutrinos der Sonne etwa in Myon-Neutrinos und Tauern-Neutrinos umgewandelt werden und dass das Ganze dann mischt. Deshalb kann nur noch ein Drittel des Neutrino-Stroms von der Sonne nachgewiesen werden. Eine andere, ganz fundamentale Frage war Anfang des letzten Jahrhunderts noch ungeklärt: Was hält den Atomkern im Inneren zusammen? Eine starke nukleare Kraft und das Meson-Teilchen - nahm der theoretische Physiker Yukawa in den 30er Jahren an. Was ein Meson ist, klärte der Amerikaner Muray Gell-Mann 1964 mit seinem Quark-Modell auf, für das er 1969 den Nobelpreis bekam. Nach diesem Modell gibt es drei fundamentale Quark-Teilchen: Das Up-, Down-und Strange-Quark sowie deren Anti-Teilchen. Ein Meson besteht aus einem Quark und einem Anti-Quark. Es hält die Protonen und Neutronen im Atomkern zusammen. Diese wiederum bestehen ebenfalls aus Quark-Teilchen. Mit der Entdeckung der kosmischen Strahlung durch den Österreicher Victor Franz Hess in den 20er Jahren wurde ein weiteres Elementarteilchen gefunden: das Myon. Wenig später fanden Physiker mehr als 100 neue subatomare Teilchen bei ersten Experimenten mit Teilchenbeschleunigern. Sie alle unterliegen denselben periodischen Mustern. Daraus entwickelten Physiker das Standardmodell. Hier sind die Bausteine der Materie, deren Massen und die Kräfte, die sie zusammenhalten aufgestellt, eine Art physikalisches Periodensystem der Elemente. Doch woher bekommen die Teilchen ihre Masse? Die Symmetrien dieses Modells lassen dies nicht zu. Deshalb gibt es eine neue Theorie, wie der amerikanische Physik-Nobelpreisträger David Gross 2008 in Lindau erklärte. An important aspect of the standard model is the mechanism for the breaking of the symmetry, the local symmetry that underlies the weak interactions. There is an Ansatz, there is a theory for how that symmetry is broken, called the Higgs mechanism which predicts in the simplest version, a particle, a very distinctive particle which hasn’t yet been observed. Der Higgs-Mechanismus ist nach dem britischen Physiker Peter Higgs benannt. Nach seiner Theorie existiert ein Feld, das der Materie Masse verleiht. Das dazu gehörige Teilchen, das Higgs Boson, zu finden, ist essentiell, wie der niederländische Physiker und Nobelpreisträger Martinus Veltman 2010 in Lindau betonte. Mit dem Large Hadron Collider am Europäischen Kernforschungszentrum CERN bei Genf suchen Wissenschaftler nach dem so genannten Gottesteilchen. Der leistungsstärkste Teilchenbeschleuniger der Welt ist ein knapp 27 Kilometer langer Ring aus supraleitenden Magneten. Hier treffen zwei Protonenstrahlen in nahezu Lichtgeschwindigkeit mit einer Kollisionsenergie von bis zu 14 Billionen Elektronenvolt aufeinander. Lange vor dem Bau des LHC begrüßte Physik-Nobelpreisträger Werner Heisenberg schon 1971 in Lindau ein solches europäisches Gemeinschaftsprojekt: Ein großes wissenschaftliches Projekt, dessen Bedeutung von allen anerkannt wird, das aber wegen der hohen Kosten von einem einzelnen europäischen Land allein nicht mehr getragen werden kann, das stellt sozusagen einen Idealfall einer solchen Gemeinschaftsarbeit dar. Heisenberg sollte recht behalten. Am CERN haben internationale Wissenschaftler jetzt erste Hinweise auf die Existenz des Higgs Boson gefunden. Sie hoffen, die Frage nach dem Ursprung der Masse aller Elementarteilchen schon bald beantworten zu können. Erst dann wird das Standardmodell der Physik vollständig und das Zusammenwirken der Grundbausteine der Materie geklärt sein.

This Mini Lecture explores the smallest building blocks of matter. It introduces to Muray Gell-Man’s quark model, the Higgs mechanism named after British physicist Peter Higgs as well as the experiments done at the research center CERN.
