Carbon

Every form of life that we know of requires carbon. It is the chemically most versatile element. It is essential to all life, both as an energy source and a building stock. Without carbon, our planet would be dead. No living beings, no plants. A sad landscape of stone and metal. Yet this element builds and nourishes life on our planet. As part of food, fuels and plastics and millions of bioactive compounds, it´s one of the most talented among the chemical elements. A carbon atom has six protons and six neutrons in its nucleus, and four electrons in its outer atomic shell. It can simultaneously enter into up to four single bonds with other atoms. Carbon can also form double, or even triple bonds with other carbon atoms and certain other elements. These properties allow for a vast variety of organic molecules, tens of millions of which are known today. Moreover, carbon forms meshes, chains and rings like no other element. So, carbon compounds could not be more diverse with respect to structure, appearance and properties. But even in its pure form, carbon displays an astounding diversity of structure and properties, from extremely hard, as in diamonds, to very soft, as in graphite. Each carbon atom in a diamond is connected through covalent bonds to four other carbon atoms. That's how you get a regular tetrahedron of five carbon atoms. The tetrahedra are interlinked, resulting in a highly stable structure with outstanding rigidity. Since all outer electrons are involved in bonding, no freely movable electron remains. That´s why diamonds can not conduct electricity and act as an isolator. In the case of graphite, only three of the four possible bonds per atom are formed, resulting in honeycomb-like six-membered cycles. A free electron per carbon atom remains, which can move freely along each layer. The fourth outer electron is responsible for both the high electrical conductivity as well as the black color of graphite. The forces acting between the layers are relatively weak, so that graphite is very soft and can be used as a lubricant. If you break down this 3D layer model to only one level, you end up with graphene. It's an aromatic system that consists of a two-dimensional string of benzene rings. Due to this unusual property, it has 100 times the tensile strength of steel. Graphene plays a vital role in current research. Konstantin Novoselov and Andre Geim received the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics for their work in this field. In 1985, the chemists Robert Curl (Jr.), Harold Kroto and Richard Smalley discovered the first fullerene, a further class of allotropes of carbon for which they received the 1996 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. The symmetric C60 molecule was named after the American architect Richard Buckminster Fuller. And it is still widely known as the "buckyball". Its carbon atoms are connected in five- and six-membered cycles, so it looks like a football. And we had to wrap things up. We said, we have a paper out of finding these chains. But we really ought to think about why this 60 peak fluctuates so much. And we were clearly that we were sitting in Rick’s office and as a group of five of us we agreed this ought to be done and then the three professors looked at the two graduate students and said You can´t ignore a result like this. It was a result sort of like this one that made us believe that we needed to investigate this further. What we knew about the chemical conditions implied that carbon 60 and to a lesser extend carbon 70 was a survior of chemical attack by carbon atoms. And so one wanted therefore to come up with some unique structure for the 60 atom carbon peak that would flood this inertness. We've already seen the chains. The chains have typically a bangeling bond at each end and so this would be a site for chemical reaction just like the divalent carbon here would be a site of chemical reaction “ Fullerenes are found in the debris of meteorites and in space. And even now, the potential of this breakthrough discovery has not been fully explored. In relative terms, there is actually very little carbon on our planet. But, in the so-called carbon cycle, many carbon-containing compounds are converted and replaced in the geosphere. The German born British physician and biochemist Hans Adolf Krebs discovered in 1937 how the different metabolic reactions within a living cell are linked to each other in a cyclic process. Here carbohydrates, fats and proteins are degraded to yield water and carbon dioxide. In the course of this so-called citric acid or Krebs cycle energy is generated and carbon building blocks are obtained. The cycle therefore can be regarded as the hub of metabolism. For his discovery, Krebs was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine together with Fritz Albert Lipmann in 1953. But Carbon dioxide isn’t only generated biochemically. Much of it is released into the atmosphere by the combustion of oil, gas or wood. Fortunately, there are autotrophic plants, which convert this atmospheric carbon dioxide back into biomass and help to alleviate the greenhouse effect. The American chemist Melvin Calvin discovered that carbon dioxide is converted into biomass and carbohydrates such as Glucose in the dark reaction of photosynthesis, an achievement that earned him the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1961. So the carbon cycle is closed, when autotrophic plants are consumed by other organisms, which in turn burn their biomass yielding CO2. Thus, the processes Krebs and Calvin identified are essential to the global carbon cycle. More than ten million carbon compounds have been identified so far. Apart from hydrogen, no other element can be found in so many compounds. No wonder that carbon is a source of fascination. Metals or metal complexes are often used as catalysts, increasing reaction rate and yield. Some of them are very important for industrial processes. One of these is the Ziegler-Natta process, which is used to make polymers, such as polyethylene. However, chance then intervened on our behalf again. Which was that one day, during an experiment in which we wanted to form odd-numbered chains using aluminium-propylene, what happened to us in this experiment was that a tiny splinter of metallic nickel slipped in without us having immediately known. Afterwards we realised it and found the cause as well – it took about three months before we figured out what the cause actually had been. Instead of many more nickel-bearing substances, we actually found completely novel, highly effective polymerising catalysts with which you can manufacture polyethylene, a very valuable compound, even at atmospheric pressures.” Today this method is used to synthesize more than 100 million tons of polymers per year. In 1963, Karl Ziegler and Giulio Natta were awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. But they were not the first who came up with the idea. In 1912, Victor Grignard already showed how magnesium can catalyse carbon-carbon bond formations. For the development of his "Grignard reagents", the Frenchman was awarded one half of the first Nobel Prize awarded for organometallic chemistry. Thanks to his work, the interest in this field increased considerably. A major advantage of organometallic chemistry is its capability to make reactions more efficient, requiring less energy and causing less toxic waste. This potential is still not exhausted. But what is increasingly important is how to synthesize them? And if you think about that in your head that´s all you need, any organic compound. We must do it in a green way and here is my definition of a green chemistry. First of all, we should make any organic compound. Any is a very important term. Any synthesizable. In high yields,”Y”, in high efficiency, “E”, in high selectivity without producing any other isomeres and so on, preferably, “S”. In YES, in a YES manner - as someone in America said and succeeded with this YES word.“ For more than 250 years and scientists have been on the trail of carbon. Many carbon-related discoveries and inventions have improved our quality of life. Today, humankind faces the issues of climate change and looming energy crises. Carbon-based compounds appear to be part of both the problem and the solution. Their diversity offers us unique opportunities to overcome these challenges. It is up to us to do so.

Alle uns bekannten Lebensformen sind auf Kohlenstoff angewiesen. Kohlenstoff ist das chemisch vielseitigste Element und sowohl als Energiequelle als auch als Baustein essentiell für alles Leben. Ohne Kohlenstoff wäre unser Planet tot. Es gäbe keine Lebewesen, keine Pflanzen. Nur eine traurige Landschaft aus Stein und Metall. Dieses Element erbaut und nährt das Leben auf unserem Planeten. Als Bestandteil von Nahrungsmitteln, Brennstoffen und Kunststoffen sowie Millionen von bioaktiven Verbindungen ist Kohlenstoff eines der talentiertesten chemischen Elemente. Ein Kohlenstoffatom besteht aus sechs Protonen und sechs Neutronen in seinem Kern sowie vier Elektronen in seiner äußeren Atomhülle. Es kann gleichzeitig bis zu vier einzelne Verbindungen mit anderen Atomen eingehen. Kohlenstoff kann zudem Doppel- oder sogar Dreifachbindungen mit anderen Kohlenstoffatomen und mit bestimmten anderen Elementen eingehen. Diese Eigenschaften ermöglichen die Bildung einer Vielzahl organischer Moleküle, von denen heute mehrere Zehnmillionen bekannt sind. Außerdem bildet Kohlenstoff wie kein anderes Element Netz-, Ketten- und Ringstrukturen. Hinsichtlich ihre Struktur, Erscheinung und Eigenschaften könnten Kohlenstoffverbindungen nicht vielfältiger sein. Aber selbst in seiner reinen Form zeigt der Kohlenstoff eine erstaunliche Diversität in seiner Struktur und seinen Eigenschaften, die von extrem hart, etwa in Diamanten, bis zu sehr weich, wie in Graphit, reichen. Jedes Kohlenstoffatom in einem Diamanten ist über kovalente Bindungen mit vier anderen Kohlenstoffatomen verbunden. Dadurch entsteht ein regelmäßiger Tetraeder aus fünf Kohlenstoffatomen. Die Tetraeder sind mit einander verbunden, was zu einer äußerst stabilen Struktur mit maximaler Härte führt. Da alle äußeren Elektronen an der Bindung beteiligt sind, bleiben keine frei beweglichen Elektronen übrig. Deshalb sind Diamanten elektrisch nicht leitend und können als Isolator eingesetzt werden. Beim Graphit werden nur drei der vier möglichen Bindungen je Atom gebildet, was zu wabenförmigen, sechsgliedrigen Kreisen führt. Je Kohlenstoffatom bleibt ein freies Elektron übrig, das innerhalb der Schichten frei beweglich ist. Das vierte äußere Elektron ist sowohl für die hohe elektrische Leitfähigkeit als auch für die schwarze Farbe des Graphits verantwortlich. Die zwischen den Schichten wirkenden Kräfte sind relativ schwach, weshalb Graphit sehr weich ist und als Schmiermittel verwendet werden kann. Wenn man dieses dreidimensionale Modell ebener Schichten auf nur einer Ebene betrachtet, erhält man Graphen. Dabei handelt es sich um ein aromatisches System, das aus einer zweidimensionalen Kette von Benzen-Ringen besteht. Aufgrund dieser ungewöhnlichen Eigenschaft verfügt es über die 100-fache Zugfestigkeit von Stahl. Graphen spielt eine entscheidende Rolle in der aktuellen Forschung. Konstantin Novoselov und Andre Geim erhielten 2010 für ihre Arbeiten auf diesem Gebiet den Nobelpreis für Physik. eine weitere Klasse von Kohlenstoff(molekülen), und erhielten dafür 1996 den Nobelpreis für Chemie. Das symmetrische C60-Molekül wurde nach dem amerikanischen Architekten Richard Buckminster Fuller benannt und ist noch heute weitgehend unter der Bezeichnung „Buckyball“ bekannt. Seine Kohlenstoffatome sind fünf- und sechsgliedrigen Waben angeordnet und der "Buckyball" sieht damit einem Fußball ähnlich. Und so erreichten wir an einem Freitagnachmittag den Punkt, an dem es galt, unsere Ergebnisse zusammenzufassen, weil Harry uns am Montag wieder verlassen musste. Und wir mussten langsam mal vorankommen. Und wir sagten, okay, über die Entdeckung dieser Ketten könnten wir zwar einen Artikel schreiben. Aber wir sollten wirklich mal darüber nachdenken, warum dieser C60-Peak so stark schwankt. Und ich erinnere mich sehr genau, dass wir zu fünft in Rick’s Büro saßen und uns darauf einigten, dass wir das tun sollten. Die drei anwesenden Professoren sahen die beiden Doktoranden an sagten: Wollt ihr nicht an diesem Wochenende arbeiten und herausfinden, wie intensiv ihr diesen C-60-Peak darstellen könnt? Wir können diesen Peak ja nicht ignorieren. Dieser Peak hat uns daran glauben lassen, dass es sich wirklich lohnt, weiter zu suchen. Was wir über die chemischen Bedingungen wussten, war,dass Kohlenstoff 60 und – in einem kleineren Umfang - Kohlenstoff 70 Relikte eines chemischen Angriffs von Kohlenstoffatomen waren. Und so wollten wir eine Struktur für das C-60-Atom finden die seine chemische Trägheit erklären konnte. Wir haben die Ketten bereits gesehen. Wir haben bereits die Ketten entdeckt. Die Ketten weisen typischerweise eine baumelnde Bindung auf und das könnte eine Stelle für eine chemische Reaktion sein. Genau wie der bivalente Kohlenstoff hier eine Stelle dafür sein könnte.“ Fullerene sind in Meteoritentrümmern und im Weltraum zu finden. Und selbst heute ist das Potenzial dieser bahnbrechenden Entdeckung noch nicht in Gänze bekannt. Relativ gesehen gibt es tatsächlich auf unserem Planeten sehr wenig Kohlenstoff. Aber im so genannten Kohlenstoffkreislauf werden in der Geosphäre viele kohlenstoffhaltige Verbindungen umgewandelt und ausgetauscht. Der in Deutschland geborene britische Physiker und Biochemiker Hans Adolf Krebs entdeckte 1937, wie die unterschiedlichen metabolischen Reaktionen in einer lebenden Zelle über einen zyklischen Prozess miteinander verbunden sind. Darin werden Kohlenhydrate, Fette und Proteine abgebaut und ergeben Wasser und Kohlendioxid. Im Verlauf dieses so genannten Citratzyklus oder Krebs-Zyklus wird Energie erzeugt und entstehen Kohlenstoffbausteine. Dieser Zyklus kann deshalb als zentrale Drehscheibe im Stoffwechsel betrachtet werden. Für diese Entdeckung erhielt Krebs 1953 gemeinsam mit Fritz Albert Lipmann den Nobelpreis für Physiologie oder Medizin. Kohlendioxid wird aber nicht nur biochemisch erzeugt, sondern auch durch Verbrennung von Öl, Gas oder Holz in großen Mengen in der Atmosphäre freigesetzt. Glücklicherweise gibt es autotrophe Pflanzen, die das atmosphärische Kohlenstoffdioxid wieder in Biomasse zurückverwandeln und so zur Verringerung des Treibhauseffekts beitragen. Der amerikanische Chemiker Melvin Calvin entdeckte, dass Kohlendioxid in der Dunkelreaktion der Photosynthese in Biomasse und Kohlenhydrate, wie Glukose, umgewandelt wird. Für diese Entdeckung erhielt er 1961 den Nobelpreis für Chemie. Der Kohlenstoffkreislauf schließt sich also, wenn autotrophe Pflanzen durch andere Organismen verbraucht werden, die wiederum ihre Biomasse verbrennen, was CO2 ergibt. Die von Krebs und Calvin identifizierten Prozesse sind also wesentlich für den globalen Kohlenstoffkreislauf. Bis heute wurden mehr als zehn Millionen Kohlenstoffverbindungen identifiziert. Außer Wasserstoff ist kein anderes Element in so vielen Verbindungen zu finden. Deshalb erstaunt es auch nicht, dass Kohlenstoff eine so große Faszination ausübt. Metalle oder Metallkomplexe werden oft als Katalysatoren verwendet, um die Reaktionsgeschwindigkeit und Ausbeute zu erhöhen. Einige haben eine besondere Bedeutung für industrielle Prozesse. Ein solcher Prozess ist der Ziegler-Natta-Prozess, der zur Herstellung von Polymeren, wie Polyethylen, eingesetzt wird. Aber wieder hat dann der bekannte Zufall weiter geholfen. Und der bestand darin, dass uns eines Tages und zwar in einem Versuch, bei dem wir aus dem Aluminium-Propyl ungeradzahlige Ketten aufbauen wollten, dass uns in diesem Versuch, ohne dass wir das zunächst erkannt hätten, eine winzige Spur metallischen Nickels hineingeriet. Nachdem wir das festgestellt und den Grund auch gefunden hatten, das dauerte ca. ein viertel Jahr, bis wir dahinterkamen, woran es eigentlich gelegen hatte. Wir fanden nämlich statt vieler weiterer nickelanaloger Stoffe, völlig neue, hochaktive Polymerisationskatalysatoren mit deren Hilfe man schon bei Atmosphärendruck ein ganz hochwertiges Polyethylen herstellen kann.“ Heute wird diese Methode zur synthetischen Herstellung von mehr als 100 Millionen Tonnen Polymeren pro Jahr eingesetzt. Für die Entwicklung seiner „Grignard-Reagenzien“ erhielt der Franzose die eine Hälfte des ersten Nobelpreises für Organometallchemie. Dank seiner Arbeit wuchs das Interesse an diesem Forschungsgebiet erheblich. Ein wesentlicher Vorteil der Organometallchemie besteht in ihrer Fähigkeit, Reaktionen effizienter zu gestalten, sodass sie weniger Energie brauchen und weniger toxische Abfälle verursachen. Dieses Potenzial ist noch immer nicht voll ausgeschöpft. Aber zunehmend wichtiger ist doch, wie etwas synthetisiert werden soll. Und wenn man darüber nachdenkt, ist alles, was man dazu braucht, irgendeine organische Verbindung. Wir müssen das in einer umweltverträglichen Weise tun und hier kommt meine Definition. Zunächst sollten wir jede organische Verbindung herstellen. Und „jede“ ist hier ein sehr wichtiger Begriff. Jede synthetisierbare Verbindung. Mit hoher Ausbeute (Yields = Y), in hoher Effizienz (Efficiency = E), in hoher Selektivität und, wenn möglich, ohne andere Isomere usw. zu erzeugen (Selectivity = S). Das Ergibt YES: Ja! In einer Ja-Einstellung, wie sie jemand in Amerika so erfolgreich beschworen hat.“ Seit über 250 Jahren sind zahllose Wissenschaftler dem Kohlenstoff auf der Spur. Viele kohlenstoffbasierte Entdeckungen und Erfindungen haben zur Verbesserung unserer Lebensqualität beigetragen. Heute kämpft die Menschheit mit dem Problem des Klimawandels und einer drohenden Energiekrise. Kohlenstoffbasierte Verbindungen sind offenbar sowohl Teil des Problems als auch der Lösung. Ihre Vielfältigkeit bietet uns einzigartige Möglichkeiten, diese Herausforderungen zu meistern. Und es liegt an uns, diese Herausforderungen anzunehmen.
