Serge Haroche & David J. Wineland (2019) - Future Quantum Technologies

Abstract

Following the development of experimental methods to manipulate isolated quantum systems and the discovery in 1994 of a quantum algorithm for efficient number factoring, there has been during the last twenty five years intense activity in quantum information science (QIS). While there is still significant interest in factoring and universal quantum computation, other applications including quantum cryptography, quantum-limited sensing, quantum metrology, quantum networks, and quantum simulations are being actively pursued. Some of these will be briefly discussed but probably the most important applications of QIS are still to be discovered - likely by some of the young people in attendance at this meeting!
