Abstract

The panel will focus on the path breaking research underlying the 2022 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics. The work by Bernanke, Diamond, and Dybvig advances our understanding of the importance of banks for economic growth and welfare, but also their inherent role in creating fragility in the financial systemic. Financial crises have played a large role in shaping the economy of the 21st century, and the panel will also discuss the impact of their theoretical insights for financial regulation and central banks dealing with financial crises.
