Thank you very much. Thank you very much for inviting me here to talk to you about the discovery of quasi periodic materials. But really it’s about the paradigm shift in crystallography. And crystallography has been a very established, mature science in which new discoveries and new significant changes were not expected. So, this is the subject and let us start. Modern crystallography started exactly 100 years ago with a famous experiment by a German scientist named von Laue who performed the first X-ray diffraction experiment. And by this he provided a tool to investigate with precision the structure of matter. Crystallography existed also before that. And geologists and scientists found crystals with facets and measured the angles between the facets and imagined how the atomic order within the material is arranged. But they did not have a scientific tool to study it in precision. And so the discovery or the development of X-ray diffraction by von Laue was the first tool, the first significant tool. And that was followed by other tools. And so 1912, 100 years ago, was the beginning of the science of crystallography. Now, von Laue studied a zinc sulphide crystal and that crystal was ordered and therefore it’s a crystal. And it was also periodic. In all the crystals that have been studied from 1912 until 1982, all of them were ordered and periodic and there was no exception. And the story of my discovery is a paradigm shift in that science. But first in order for all of you to understand what I am talking about, I will explain very simply 3 things. I will say a couple of words about order, about periodicity and about rotational symmetry. So, let us start with order. Here we have a structure, a 2 dimensional structure which is clearly ordered. If I would ask you to continue this in this direction or in that direction, you will know exactly how to do that. This is order. What about periodicity? Let us look in this direction, this direction in the lattice. You see that there is periodicity. The distance from here to here equals the distance from here to here and so on. This is periodicity. Any direction in the lattice, in this ordered periodic lattice, will have periodicity. For instance in this direction you can see the periodicity, in this direction you can see the periodicity, any direction there is periodicity, that’s periodicity. What about rotational symmetry. This structure has a four-fold rotational symmetry. Now I have added a handle here so that when I rotate it you will see what I did. So I can rotate this 90 degrees and it looks exactly the same. And it goes back to where it was. This has a four-fold rotational symmetry, that’s all. Now, let’s define rotational symmetry. An image has a rotational symmetry if there is a centre point around which the object is turned a certain number of degrees and the object still looks the same. It measures itself a number of times while it is being rotated. And here are a few examples. This card has a two-fold rotational symmetry. This has three-fold, this flower five-fold, this pizza six-fold and you can continue. Now, because of the observations of von Laue and 100’s of 1,000’s of other crystals that were investigated after von Laue, until 1982, the definition of a crystal was something like that. So here is one definition. This is from a book by Cullity from which I studied X-ray diffraction, excellent book. A solid composed of atoms arranged in a pattern, periodic in 3 dimensions, this is a crystal. So the arrangement is periodic in 3 dimensions. Another definition, another book, same thing, different words: Atoms in a crystal are arranged in a pattern that repeats itself in 3 dimensions throughout the interior of the crystal. This was the definition of a crystal. When people said crystal they meant periodic crystal. And there was no exception. Now this is a book by Charles Kittel from which we studied solid state physics. And I know you cannot read it, it’s too small. So this is why I enlarge it for you. And it says the following: "We can make a crystal from molecules which individually, each one of them, have a five-fold rotation axis. But we should not expect the lattice to have a five-fold rotation axis." So each molecule can have any rotational axis you want but not the lattice because in periodic lattice you cannot have five-fold rotation symmetry. Why so? Here is an example. When I did my masters degree at the Technion, I took a class in crystallography and in the final exam they gave me this question. And the question was: "Prove that five-fold rotation symmetry cannot exist in crystals." They meant periodic crystals but all crystals were periodic at that time. So here’s the proof. I proved it and I passed the test and this is why I am here now. So what you do now, you can do the following. There are 2 atoms, P and Q in a periodic lattice. And you choose 2 atoms. The distance between them is the shortest distance within the lattice. So these are the closest atoms that you can find. Now, if five-fold rotational symmetry is allowed, then you should be able to rotate Q around P five times and P around Q five times. And let’s see what happens when you do that. So here is Q and you can rotate it 2, 3, 4 and 5 and there should be a Q prime atom here. Now P around Q 2, 3, 4 and 5 and there should be a P prime atom here. But clearly you can see that because of geometrical reasons the distance P prime, Q prime is shorter than the distance P Q and this cannot be because R is the shorter distance between 2 atoms. So here goes... So, this was the proof as I said. I passed the test. Ok, so this was the wisdom. And it is true in periodic materials you cannot have five-fold rotation symmetry. Now, here are a few examples. These are atoms in a diamond. Every picture that you will see here I took it in some part of my career. Atoms in diamond which is periodic. So you see clearly that it is ordered and you see that there is periodicity. So any direction that you go, for instance this direction you see periodicity. In this direction you see periodicity. Any direction periodicity. In the allowed rotational symmetry in such a lattice are 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6, no 5 and nothing beyond 6. This is what happens in real space of periodic materials. Was true, still true. Now let me take you now to a different space. Not to the real space, let me take you to reciprocal space. The reciprocal space is a mathematical space which helps us to understand diffraction patterns. What you see here is a diffraction pattern taken by an electron microscope. This is a TEM, transmission electron microscope diffraction pattern. And this diffraction pattern exists in the mathematical space which we call the reciprocal space. It’s imaginary. It helps us understand what happens in the diffraction space. What you see here, this here is the transmitted beam. This is the beam that goes through the specimen and hits the screen right smack dab in the centre. And all the other points are diffracted points. So, you see here that in this reciprocal space there is order and there is periodicity. These are diffracted spots, all of them. Clearly you see order. Clearly if you go in this direction, you see periodicity. If you go in this direction, you see periodicity. If you go in this direction, you see periodicity. The same rules that apply in the real space apply in the reciprocal space. So the rotation symmetry that are allowed, again here 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6, no 5 and nothing beyond 6. I hope that everything is clear. And then something amazing happens. In 1992, down here, 1992, the International Union of Crystallography which is a bold precision body of mathematical crystallographers, no nonsense organisation, come up with this wonderful new definition of a crystal. Let us read this definition and I will show you why it is so wonderful. It says the following. It says: "By crystal we mean any solid having an essentially discrete diffraction diagram." This is like a song. This is not like a bold definition. It says the following. It doesn’t say a crystal is, "by crystal we mean any solid having an essentially discrete diffraction diagram". What happened? The real space is defined by the reciprocal space. Not the other way. The atoms, the order of the atoms is defined by the diffraction pattern, having an essentially diffraction diagram, very soft definition. Let us continue. Have you ever seen a soft definition like this of anything in science? And this comes from the International Union of Crystallography. This is the strictest body on earth. This is a wonderful definition. It is wonderful because it is a humble definition. It is an open definition and a humble scientist is a good scientist. Somebody who is willing to listen and to accept new ideas. What happened that such a definition was created by the international union of crystallography? This is the story. So, 1982 was the 70th birth of crystallography. Remember it started in 1912 and this was the year when the periodic crystals were discovered. Let me take you now to my laboratory at NBS, National Bureau of Standards, wonderful laboratory in which they can make materials. And they have excellent scientists to collaborate with. And I did my first sabbatical at NBS. Now it is called NIST, National Institute of Standards and Technology, Maryland USA. This is the logbook from April 8th 1982 and the material was aluminium 25 weight percent manganese. And this shows you students why you should write a good logbook of every experiment that you make because sometimes that may be important. Now, this logbook was written for me, it was not meant to be seen by anybody. This is why it is so sloppy and it is shorthand written and so on. But it contains a lot of information. So this is the morning of that day and this is the plate number of the microscope, SAD doesn’t mean that I was sad that morning. It means that it is a selected area diffraction pattern. So I take a few of these and then I arrive at the place 1724, 36,000 times magnification. I see something. I will show you that picture. I said: "Wow, that’s amazing, let’s see what is the diffraction pattern." I take the diffraction pattern and look at it. I’ll show it to you and say "ten-fold?" with a question mark. Such animal does not exist, forbidden. Ok, you remember 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6, no 5, nothing beyond 6. And then I thought that I knew what it was and I will explain you what I thought and I tried to find that thing and I couldn’t find it. I will explain. So, this was a picture. And this is a single crystal right here and this is another single crystal and this is another one. We call them grains. So this is a... This material has many grains, many crystals. But look at this crystal. It’s pitch black and this is black and this is black and this is black. This is a bright field image taken by the transmitted beam. And when a crystal looks very black it means either that it is very thick and the specimen is bad but I prepared the specimen so it must be good. So, the other option is that it diffracts heavily so almost no intensity go through to the transmitted beam. And I said: "Wow, let's look at the diffraction pattern." And this is the diffraction pattern. This is the original one. That’s it. Now, I looked at the diffraction pattern and said: "Hmm, what is this funny rotational symmetry?" I start to count: So this is one strange thing. The other thing is that this diffraction pattern lost the periodicity. No periodicity. See, you take the distance from here to here and multiply by 2, integer, you get here. And there is nothing there. No periodicity, ten-fold rotational symmetry, very strange. So, what you see here is that the ratio of any distance, say, distance from here to here, divided by the distance from here to here. This to the centre divided by this to the centre will give you the ratio of the Golden Mean which is something that I shouldn’t say because you cannot just measure and divide and get an irrational number. You know that yeah? But this comes from theory. So this is called the Golden Mean or the Fibonacci number and I will introduce you to Mr. Fibonacci in a few minutes. So irrational numbers, ten-fold rotational symmetry, no periodicity, brave new world. So, at the beginning I said: "Ok, this must be twined crystals." I’ll show you what twins are. Oh, by the way of course you can take your specimen and rotate it and tilt it and take diffraction patterns from each and every direction. And you get an assembly of diffraction patterns that really define the symmetry of the crystal. And so this set of diffraction patterns define the symmetry of the crystal. Ok, what are twins? This is an introduction to twining. Here is a picture, a high resolution transmission electron microscope picture of atoms in diamond. And sometimes when you grow diamond as I have done, you get twins in the structure. What you see here, these are 5 crystals, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. And there is a boundary between the crystals. We call that a grain boundary. But this is not just any arbitrary grain boundary, this is a twin boundary. What does it mean? Look here, see this row of atoms, see this row of atoms. This is a mirror image of that. And the boundary is the mirror. Ok, see? From here to here and from here to here and from here to here and from here to here. These are 5 mirrors. These are twins, these are twin related crystals and in this case there are 5 of them. And I said: "Ok." You see, if you take a diffraction pattern from this crystal, then you will get a periodic diffraction pattern. If you take one from this crystal, you get a periodic diffraction pattern. But if you take a diffraction pattern from all of them together, then you will have 5 superimposed diffraction patterns. And that will have obviously a five-fold rotational symmetry. Or in another example which is right here; here was another phenomenon. This is a crystal in the aluminium iron system. These are very abundant. You can find them readily when you have enough iron to aluminium you have these crystals. These crystals are very special because they are twinned related. There are 10 of them, you can count them 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, all 10 of them. If you take a diffraction pattern from here, you’ll have a periodic diffraction pattern and so on. But if you take a diffraction pattern from all of them, then you will have 10 superimposed diffraction patterns with ten-fold rotational symmetry. But this is pseudo rotational symmetry, ten-fold, because it is obtained from 10 different crystals. And this is what I saw. So my next move that morning of April 8th 1982 was to say: "Ok, I will just find the twins, record them and forget about it." So I performed a series of experiments. Oh, by the way this is how the diffraction pattern from all of them together looks like. And as you can see, you can count it. It has ten-fold rotational symmetry. But this is a pseudo five-fold or pseudo ten-fold rotational symmetry. This is just one of them. Ok. I started to perform a series of experiments. I will not dwell too long on the experiments. But I want to mention to you that a TM, a transmission microscope, is an extremely powerful tool for discoveries because for the transmission electron microscope any crystal of any size is a single crystal because the magnification and the resolution is such that you see atoms clearly. So anything is a single crystal which is not the case with x-rays. And I will talk about it. So, this is a series of dark field experiment. I was looking for the twins and could not find them. So I performed another experiment. This is called micro-diffraction experiment. When you do a micro-diffraction experiment what you really do is the following. You take the electron beam in the electron microscope and converge it into a small spot, the smallest you can, on the specimen. And then you can get a diffraction pattern from that very, very tiny little area. And even there is 1 twin there, 1 crystal there, then you will have a periodic diffraction pattern. And if you move the beam or move the specimen under the beam, you will get another one and another one and all of them will be periodic. This is if there are small tiny little twins. Well, I couldn’t find them. Anywhere I went this was the diffraction pattern. Final experiment that I want to show you. I didn’t do that. The people who did it are colleagues from France. And they did it later on. But this is a nice little experiment. You see the French people had a high resolution microscope. Now we talk about the early ‘80’s. We didn’t have that, the French had that. And so they perform this experiment. What you see here is a lattice image of a quasi-periodic material and this is the diffraction pattern which you already know. But what the French colleagues did was the following. They took this picture and shone a laser beam on it. Just this laser beam. And they have received an optical diffraction pattern. And that optical diffraction pattern is this. So, this also has ten-fold rotations symmetry, like this. So you say: Ok, big deal. Both are Fourier transform of the image so of course they should look the same." Ah ha, it is true, but there is something else. You see, they took a diffraction pattern from this area only and they made it shrink and shrink and shrink. This didn’t change. It disappeared of course for lack of information but it didn’t change on the atomic level, no twins. So, that structure is inherent internal property of the material. This is the more modern picture of high resolution. And you can see these motifs. There is no periodicity. There I found the first person to collaborate with me, Professor Ilan Blech, and he proposed a model that would explain how this material could form. And then we sent a paper to the Journal of Applied Physics and that paper behaved like a tennis ball that was hit against the wall. There was 1, 2 and it was back on my desk with a letter saying that this paper will not interest the community of physicists. Ok. And they also recommended that I will send it to a metallurgical journal. Which I did and I sent that paper to Metallurgical Transactions and they accepted it and published it. But they published it 6 or 7 months deep into 1985. In the meantime I came back to NBS. Met my host again, a Professor John Cahn, and he proposed that we will write another paper, short one. And he added also Denis Gratias, a mathematical crystallographer from France, and the 4 of us sent another paper to PRL, Physical Review Letters. It was accepted and published within one month. And when this paper appeared hell broke loose. All over the world people started to call me, write email, "Hey Danny, we have it, we have it. It’s fantastic." because I explained exactly how to prepare the materials. They repeated my material, my experiments but immediately started to look for other materials and over time the community found 100’s of such quasi periodic materials. Ok, so this is the publication. Now, let's say a couple of words about icosahedral symmetry because the first phase was called icosahedral phase. This is an icosahedron and for sake of time I will not dwell on that. Let me show you another picture, it’s easier to understand. Alright, football season. So this is a football as it was up until recently. Now they change the symmetry of the football as you know. But this football has an icosahedral symmetry. And this clearly has five-fold rotational symmetry, two-fold when you look here and three-fold when you look here. And this has icosahedral symmetry. I doubt that football players know that. Now, let me introduce you to somebody who you should really know, those of you who don’t know Mr. Fibonacci very well, because Mr. Fibonacci, they called him block head in Pisa. He was the greatest mathematician of his time and probably 500 years after him he was still the greatest. This is when he was young. This is the statue on his grave. His grave is just behind the inclined tower of Pisa. If you visit the inclined tower of Pisa, go 20 metres behind it there is a graveyard under a roof, say hello to Mr. Fibonacci for me. So, Fibonacci rabbits is maybe his most famous experiment, gedankenexperiment in his mind. He says the following. You have a female rabbit and her friends come to visit her and now she’s pregnant. And she gives birth to a little one in the next month. And every month, there’s a persistent friend, every month she is pregnant and she gives birth to one little rabbit. This is the mother. The little rabbit, female again, has too mature and for one month it has to grow up before it can reproduce. So, in the second month she gives birth to a little one, in the third month this mother gives birth to a little one and this little one matures. In the third one this mother gives birth to a little one, this little one matures and this mother gives birth to a little one. That’s all you have to know. And you can continue this series forever if you understand the rule. Now I want to show you several things. Number 1, look here. We have large rabbit and small rabbit, so large, small, large, large, small, large, small, large, large, small, large, large, small and so on and so forth. There is no motif that repeats itself in this series ever. Not as single motif that repeats itself. This is a quasi-periodical array in one dimension. Now, there are other rules. The number of rabbits written here in each month equals the number of rabbits in the 2 previous months. This is what this says. And if you go to infinity then the ratio of the number of rabbits in the far away month divided by the number of rabbits in the month before will give you the irrational number which is Tau which is 1+5^0.5 / 2 which is he Fibonacci number. That’s all about Fibonacci for now. He published it in the year 1202. Quasi periodicity in 2 dimension, Roger Penrose, eminent British scientist living in our time, he designed these 2 tiles that could tile a 2 dimensional space, a plain in a quasi-periodic way using only 2 tiles. A thin rhombus and a thick rhombus. And if you follow a few matching rules, you can tile a plain quasi periodically to any size you want. No motif that that repeats itself. What about 3 dimensions quasi periodicity? Well, here’s a crystal which is quasi periodic and you can clearly see this is from the system magnesium-zinc-cerium, five-fold facets. This is a quasi-periodic material. Now I want to show you very quickly something very nice. What you can do is the following. You can take a high dimensional space, 2 dimensions, 6 dimensions. Whatever you want. And in this case it’s a 2 dimensional space. You can cut and make a strip in it and project the atoms or the mathematical points within the lattice. So what do we have here? We have here a mathematical lattice. Each in the section has a little point there which doesn’t have any dimension. It’s a mathematical point in each intersection. So now what we can do is make a cut. We create this strip. But this direction is not just any direction. The tangent of this Alpha is the Fibonacci number Tau which is an irrational number. Now think. What does it mean? If I start in a lattice point here, this line will never meet any other point ever because it’s an irrational number. If it met a point, then the tangent would be a rational number. But this is an irrational number. So this line meets one point and no other point ever. Now you can take all the points inside and project them onto this line. And see what happens. Look at the distance. Large, large, small, large, large, small, large, small. Ah, Fibonacci rabbits! Quasi periodicity on a line. And if you have some time this evening, you can take a 6 dimension space, make a cut and project it on to a 3 dimensional space. And then you will have a quasi-periodic array in 3 dimensions and you have created a new quasi crystal. Depends on what motif you took in your periodic 6 dimensional space. Just if you have time. Ok. Here is another thing. This is what I did before. Ok, the tangent is this Fibonacci number. Now I bring red lines. Ah, the red lines are almost, almost like the black line but not quite because they meet in this point. And here they meet in this point. So the tangent is this divided by this which is 11. You can count it, 11 divided by 7 which is a rational number. And this is a periodic array, a periodic line. Why so? Because this is one point and here is another one and there will be another one and another one and another one. Large motif but periodicity. There are crystals which are built based on the red line. And they are almost quasi periodic. We call them approximants. And they have properties which are adjacent, similar but not quite as quasi periodic materials. Now to the story. From 1982 to 1984 I told my story to everybody who was willing to listen. And people tried to teach me that this is impossible and they put books on my desk smiling sheepishly and so on. And I said my material is not in the book. The reaction was between an encouragement... John Cahn my host said: "Danny, this material is telling us something and I challenge you find out what it is." This was a good response. There were bad responses. And for some time I felt quite lonely and not so easy. If you want to see how I felt, that’s about it. Ok. So, that was in the beginning. Ilan Blech joined, John Cahn joined, Denis Gratias and after the first publication we were a growing, avant-garde community of scientists who studied quasi periodic material. Discovered new ones. It was an amazing experience because the numbers of these researchers grew daily and it was wonderful. So I was not alone. However, the International Union of Crystallography said to me and to the community: There is a history to that because of von Laue and the precision tool of the X-ray diffraction prevented them from accepting anything else. And in 1987 my colleagues in France and in Japan gave me this diffraction pattern. This is X-ray Laue diffraction patterns from quasi periodic materials, five-fold, beautiful, five- fold, three-fold, two-fold, excellent. I showed these results in Perth, Australia in the International Union of Crystallography meeting 1987. And then the community said: "Ok Danny. Now you're talking." And they created a committee that redefined crystal and you saw the definition before. So this was a second wave of acceptance. However, if you think this is the end of it, not so fast because from 1987 onward to 1994 there was still great big opposition by one of the most eminent scientists of the 20th century, Professor Linus Pauling. And he said the following. He said on stages like this and other: "Danny Shechtman is talking nonsense." He said: "There are no quasi crystals, just quasi scientists." And he was not alone because he was the godfather of American Chemical Society and they were behind him. And I can understand them. Here is this eminent star, Linus Pauling, and what's his name? I mean who are you going to listen to? But we had a lot of communication. We don’t have time for that. But in 1994 Professor Pauling died and with that died the opposition and that was that. I want to mention a few names. No, it’s not funny when somebody dies it’s a tragedy. I want to mention a few names that had seminal contribution before I finish. Roger Penrose, Alan Mackay. I mention Roger Penrose, Alan Mackay took Roger Penrose’s tiles and preformed a Fourier transform and received a sharp diffraction pattern in the reciprocal space. And he said: "Roger Penrose’s tiles can diffract in sharp spots." This was wonderful. Next my colleagues Ilan Blech, Denis Gratias and John Cahn. They published the first paper and the second paper with me. And last but not least Dov Levine and Paul Steinhardt. Dov Levine is now professor at Technion, Paul Steinhardt is in Princeton, a professor there. And they proposed a tiling model based on Roger Penrose and Alan Mackay which is now the ruling model of how atoms in quasi periodic materials are arranged. While order was synonym to periodicity, now we know that order can be periodic, it can be quasi periodic and it is open to other discoveries which is great. Now before I finish I want to ask the following question because you don’t have time to ask questions. Why quasi periodic materials were never discovered before 1982? What is it, is it because they are very rare? Or is it because they are not stable? Or is it because they are difficult to make? Why is it that nobody... People studied 100’s of 1000’s of crystals, and nobody ever saw quasi periodic material? What is it? Well, are they rare? Ah, not at all. This is a partial, small partial list of all quasi periodic materials based on aluminium alone. And there are many others. There are 100’s of them. No, that’s not the reason. Maybe they are not stable? Ah, usually they are. All of them are stable at room temperature where you study them. Some of them are stable and they melt concurrently until when you heat them up. So, no, this is not the reason. Are they difficult to make? Ah, not at all. You can make them by casting, by rapid solidification, by single crystal growth, electron-deposition, CVD, PVD. Any way you make any metallic alloy, you can make them. So what is the reason? And this is my last slide. Number 1: Quasi periodic materials should have been discovered by TEM. There was no other tool that could have discovered quasi periodic materials because they were small. They were 2 microns in size and so on. And when we knew the composition it took us 3 years to grow large enough crystals for x-ray diffraction. So they could not have been discovered by anything else but transmission electron microscopy. This is the power of transmission electron microscopy. But that is not enough because when you use transmission electron microscopy you have to be a professional. You have to be an expert and you have to know how to use all techniques, you have to know the crystallography and you have to know how to use the fantastic capability of a TEM. And I regret to tell you that very few students around the world become experts in transmission electron microscopy. Although millions of them used the electron microscope as a wonderful magnifying glass. But they don’t become experts. And this is my message to you. If you want to succeed in your career, become expert in something, right now, when you are doing your PhD and other degrees. Become experts and I promise you if you become an expert in something you will have a wonderful career. Choose something that you like, become an expert and you will have a wonderful career. We don’t have time to dwell on that, I’m sorry. And then you have to have tenacity when you discover something. What does it mean? Don’t let go. Here is a brief short story where this one student in Europe who saw my diffraction pattern before me. How do I know that? Because I heard it from his professor. And his professor tells me the following. I sieve through the plates of electron microscopy for my students and before you somebody took your picture of electron diffraction. I called my ex-student, now PhD for many years, and he is a big chief somewhere and I said to him: And he said: "Yes, of course professor, of course I know." Said the professor: "Why didn’t you tell me?" Said the ex student: "You know, professor. If I told you, you would want me to stay for 2 more years on my PhD." Tenacity, don’t let go. You find something just like a Rottweiler dog, bite and don’t let go. You have to believe in yourself. But if you are an expert you do that. You become the worse critic of yourself. And then you have to have some perseverance because you face difficulties but you have to have the power and the will to stand tall and say: "I know I’m right because I am an experimentalist and I am a professional. And I am willing to listen but I am not listening to theories who tell me best on old paradigm that that cannot be. Come with something more substantial. Then we can talk." Thank you so much.

Vielen Dank! Ich möchte mich herzlich für die Einladung bedanken, Ihnen hier über die Entdeckung der quasiperiodischen Materialien berichten zu dürfen. In Wirklichkeit rede ich über einen Paradigmenwechsel in der Kristallographie. Und die Kristallographie war eine schon sehr etablierte, entwickelte Wissenschaft, in der neue Entdeckungen und neue, signifikante Änderungen nicht erwartet wurden. So, das ist also das Thema und lassen Sie uns anfangen. Die moderne Kristallographie begann genau vor 100 Jahren mit einem berühmten Experiment eines Deutschen Wissenschaftlers namens von Laue, der das erste Röntgenbeugungsexperiment durchführte. Und damit stellte er ein Werkzeug zur Verfügung, um die Struktur der Materie mit Präzision zu untersuchen. Kristallographie existierte schon vorher. Und Geologen und Wissenschaftler fanden Kristalle mit Kristallflächen und bestimmten die Winkel zwischen den Kristallflächen und stellten sich vor, wie die Atomordnung innerhalb des Materials aussieht. Aber sie hatten kein wissenschaftliches Werkzeug, um sie präzise zu untersuchen. Und so war die Entdeckung oder Entwicklung der Röntgenbeugung durch von Laue das erste Werkzeug, das erste wichtige Werkzeug. Und es folgten andere Werkzeuge. Uns daher war 1912, vor 100 Jahren, der Beginn der Kristallographie als Wissenschaft. Nun, von Laue untersuchte ein Zinksulfidkristall, und dieses Kristall hatte eine Ordnung und daher war es ein Kristall. Und es war auch periodisch. Alle Kristalle, die von 1912 bis 1982 untersuchte wurden, alle hatten eine Ordnung und waren periodisch und es gab keine Ausnahme. Und die Geschichte meiner Entdeckung ist ein Paradigmenwechsel in dieser Wissenschaft. Aber zunächst möchte ich sehr einfach drei Dinge erklären, damit Sie alle verstehen, worüber ich hier rede. Ich werde ein paar Worte über die Ordnung, Periodizität und über Rotationssymmetrie verlieren. Also, beginnen wir mit der Ordnung. Hier haben wir eine Struktur, eine zweidimensionale Struktur, die klar geordnet ist. Wenn ich Sie bitten würde, dies in diese oder jene Richtung fortzusetzen, wüssten Sie genau, wie Sie das machen müssten. Das ist Ordnung. Was ist Periodizität? Lassen Sie uns in diese Richtung schauen, diese Richtung im Kristallgitter. Man sieht, dass dort eine Periodizität herrscht. Der Abstand von hier nach hier ist gleich dem Abstand von hier nach da und so weiter. Das ist Periodizität. Jede Richtung in diesem Kristallgitter, in diesem geordneten periodischen Gitter, wird eine Periodizität haben. Beispielsweise kann man in dieser Richtung die Periodizität sehen, in dieser Richtung kann man die Periodizität sehen, in jeder Richtung besteht Periodizität, das ist Periodizität. Was ist Rotationssymmetrie? Diese Struktur hat eine vierfache Rotationssymmetrie. Nun habe ich hier eine Anzeige hinzugefügt, so dass Sie sehen können, was ich gemacht habe, wenn ich es drehe. Ich kann dies jetzt um 90 Grad drehen und es sieht genauso aus. 180 Grad, es sieht genauso aus, 270 Grad, sieht auch so aus. Und es geht zurück zu der Stellung, in der es vorher war. Dies hat eine vierfache Rotationssymmetrie, das ist alles. Nun, lassen Sie uns Rotationssymmetrie definieren. Ein Bild ist rotationssymmetrisch, wenn es einen Mittelpunkt gibt, um das man das Objekt um eine bestimmte Gradzahl dreht und das Objekt immer noch gleich aussieht. Die Rotationssymmetrie misst, wie oft es das macht, während es gedreht wird. Und hier sind ein paar Beispiele. Diese Karte hat eine zweifache Rotationssymmetrie. Dies hat eine dreifache, diese Blume eine fünffache, diese Pizza eine sechsfache und man kann so weiter machen. Nun, wegen der Beobachtungen von Laues und Hunderttausenden anderen Kristallen, die nach von Laue untersucht worden sind, war bis 1982 die Definition eines Kristalls ungefähr so. So, hier ist eine Definition. Diese ist aus einem Buch von Cullity, aus dem ich die Röntgenbeugung lernte, ein ausgezeichnetes Buch. Ein Festkörper, der aus Atomen besteht, die in einem dreidimensionalen periodischen Muster angeordnet sind, ist ein Kristall. Die Anordnung ist also in drei Dimensionen periodisch. Eine weitere Definition, ein anderes Buch, dasselbe mit anderen Worten: Die Atome in einem Kristall sind nach einem Muster angeordnet, das sich im gesamten Inneren des Kristalls in 3 Dimensionen wiederholt. Das war die Definition eines Kristalls. Wenn man von einem Kristall sprach, meinte man einen periodischen Kristall. Und es gab keine Ausnahme. Nun, dies ist ein Buch von Charles Kittel, aus dem wir die Festkörperphysik lernten. Ich weiß, dass Sie das nicht lesen können, es ist zu klein. Deshalb habe ich es hier für Sie vergrößert. Und hier steht das Folgende: "Man kann einen Kristall aus Molekülen herstellen, die für sich gesehen eine fünffache Rotationsachse haben. Aber man sollte nicht erwarten, dass das Kristallgitter eine fünffache Rotationsachse hat. Jedes Molekül kann irgendeine Rotationsachse, die man haben möchte, besitzen, aber nicht das Gitter, weil man in periodischen Gittern keine fünffache Rotationssymmetrie haben kann. Warum? Hier ist ein Beispiel. Als ich meinen Masterabschluss an der Technion machte, besuchte ich eine Vorlesung in Kristallographie und in der Abschlussprüfung bekam ich diese Frage. Und die Frage war: "Beweisen Sie, dass in Kristallen keine fünffache Rotationssymmetrie existieren kann." Das bedeutete in periodischen Kristallen, aber zu der Zeit waren alle Kristalle periodisch. Hier ist also der Beweis. Ich bewies es und bestand die Prüfung, und deshalb bin ich nun hier. So, was man nun macht, man macht das Folgende. Es gibt in einem periodischen Gitter zwei Atome, P und Q. Und man wählt zwei Atome. Die Entfernung zwischen ihnen ist die kürzeste Entfernung im Gitter. So, dies sind die Atome mit dem kleinsten Abstand, die man finden kann. Nun, wenn eine fünffache Rotationssymmetrie erlaubt ist, dann sollte man Q fünfmal um P und P fünfmal um Q drehen können. Lassen Sie uns nun sehen, was passiert, wenn man das macht. So, hier ist Q und man kann es 2, 3, 4 und 5-mal drehen, und es sollte ein Q'-Atom hier sein. Nun, P um Q 2, 3, 4 und 5 und hier sollte ein P'-Atom sein. Aber man kann klar sehen, dass aus geometrischen Gründen die Entfernung P'-Q' kürzer ist als die Entfernung P-Q, und das kann nicht sein, weil r die kürzeste Entfernung zwischen zwei Atomen ist. So, hier ist.... So, das war der Beweis, wie ich sagte: Ich bestand die Prüfung. Ok, das war also die Weisheit. Und es ist wahr, in periodischen Materialien kann man keine fünffache Rotationssymmetrie haben. Nun habe ich hier ein paar Beispiele. Dies sind die Atome in einem Diamanten. Ich habe jedes Bild, das Sie hier sehen werden, zu einem Zeitpunkt meiner Karriere aufgenommen. Atome im Diamanten, der periodisch ist. Man sieht klar, dass er eine Ordnung hat und man sieht, dass dort eine Periodizität herrscht. Wenn man in irgendeine Richtung geht, beispielsweise diese Richtung, sieht man Periodizität. In dieser Richtung sieht man Periodizität. In jeder Richtung Periodizität. Die erlaubte Rotationssymmetrie in solchen Gittern ist 1, 2, 3, 4 und 6, keine 5 und keine größer als 6. Dies passiert im realen Raum periodischer Materialien. War richtig, ist immer noch richtig. Nun möchte ich Sie in einen anderen Raum mitnehmen. Nicht in den realen Raum, lassen Sie sich in den reziproken Raum mitnehmen. Der reziproke Raum ist ein mathematischer Raum, der uns hilft, Beugungsmuster zu verstehen. Was Sie hier sehen, ist ein Beugungsmuster, aufgenommen mit einem Elektronenmikroskop. Dies ist ein TEM, Beugungsmuster eines Transmissionselektronenmikroskops. Und dieses Beugungsmuster existiert im mathematischen Raum, den wir den reziproken Raum nennen. Er ist imaginär. Es hilft uns zu verstehen, was im Beugungsraum passiert. Was Sie hier sehen, das hier ist der durchgelassene Strahl. Das ist der Strahl, der durch die Probe hindurchgeht und den Schirm genau in der Mitte trifft. Und alle anderen Punkte sind Beugungspunkte. Sie sehen hier, dass es im reziproken Raum Ordnung gibt und Periodizität. Dies sind Beugungspunkte, jeder einzelne. Man sieht klar die Ordnung. Ganz klar, wenn man in diese Richtung geht, sieht man Periodizität. Wenn man in diese Richtung geht, sieht man Periodizität. Wenn man in diese Richtung geht, sieht man Periodizität. Dieselben Regeln, die im realen Raum zutreffen, treffen im reziproken Raum zu. So, die Rotationssymmetrien, die erlaubt sind, sind wieder 1, 2, 3, 4 und 6, keine 5 und nichts über 6. Ich hoffe, dass alles klar ist. Und dann passiert etwas Unglaubliches. Im Jahr 1992, hier unten, 1992 erstellte die Internationale Kristallographische Union, die ein mutiges Präzisionsgremium der mathematischen Kristallographen ist, eine Organisation, die keinen Unsinn duldet, diese wunderbare neue Definition eines Kristalls. Lassen Sie uns diese Definition lesen und ich zeige Ihnen, warum sie so wunderbar ist. Sie besagt das Folgende. Sie lautet: "Unter Kristall verstehen wir irgendeinen Festkörper, der ein im Wesentlichen diskretes Beugungsdiagramm hat." Das ist wie ein Lied. Dies ist keine mutige Definition. Sie besagt das Folgende. Sie sagt nicht, ein Kristall ist..., "Unter Kristall verstehen wir irgendeinen Festkörper, der ein im Wesentlichen diskretes Beugungsdiagramm hat." Was war passiert? Der reale Raum wird durch den reziproken Raum definiert. Nicht anders herum. Die Atome, die Ordnung der Atome ist durch das Beugungsmuster definiert, haben ein im Wesentlichen [diskretes] Beugungsdiagramm, eine sehr weiche Definition. Machen wir weiter. Haben Sie jemals eine so weiche Definition von irgendwas in der Wissenschaft gesehen? Und das kommt von der Internationalen Kristallographischen Union. Das ist das strengste Gremium auf der Erde. Dies ist eine wunderbare Definition. Sie ist wunderbar, weil sie eine demütige Definition ist. Es ist eine offene Definition und ein demütiger Wissenschaftler ist ein guter Wissenschaftler. Jemand, der bereit ist zuzuhören und neue Ideen zu akzeptieren. Was war passiert, dass eine solche Definition durch die Internationale Kristallographische Union geschaffen wurde? Dies ist die Geschichte. 1982 war also der 70. Geburtstag der Kristallographie. Erinnern Sie sich daran, dass sie 1912 begann und es das Jahr war, in dem die periodischen Kristalle entdeckt wurden. Ich möchte Sie nun in mein Labor beim NBS, National Bureau of Standards, mitnehmen, einem wunderbaren Labor, in dem sie Materialien herstellen können. Und sie haben exzellente Wissenschaftler, mit denen man zusammenarbeiten kann. Und ich hatte meinen ersten Forschungsurlaub beim NBS. Jetzt wird es NIST, National Institute of Standards and Technology, Maryland USA, genannt. Dies ist mein Laborbuch vom 8. April 1982 und das Material war Aluminium mit 25 Gewichtsprozent Mangan. Und das zeigt Ihnen, verehrte Studenten, warum Sie für jedes Experiment, das Sie durchführen, ein gutes Laborbuch führen sollten, weil es wichtig sein kann. Nun, dieses Laborbuch war für mich geschrieben, es sollte nicht von anderen gelesen werden. Darum ist es so schludrig und in Kurzschrift geschrieben und so weiter. Aber es enthält eine Menge an Information. So, dies ist der Morgen dieses Tages und das ist die Aufnahmenummer des Mikroskops, SAD heißt nicht, dass ich an dem Morgen traurig war. Es bedeutet, dass es das Beugungsmuster eines ausgewählten Bereichs ist. So nehme ich ein paar davon auf und dann erreichte ich Aufnahme 1724, 36.000-fache Vergrößerung. Ich sehe etwas. Ich zeige Ihnen das Bild. Ich sagte: "Meine Güte, das ist erstaunlich, sehen wir uns das Beugungsmuster an." Ich nehme das Beugungsmuster und sehe es an. Ich zeige es Ihnen, und sagte dann "zehnfach?" mit einem Fragezeichen. So etwas gibt es nicht, es ist verboten. Ok, Sie erinnern sich, 1, 2, 3, 4 und 6, nicht 5, nichts über 6. Und dann dachte ich, ich wüsste was es war und ich erkläre Ihnen, was ich dachte, und ich versuchte, das Ding zu finden und konnte es nicht. Ich werde es erklären. So, dies war ein Bild. Und dies ist ein Einkristall hier und hier ist ein weiterer Einkristall und dies ist ein weiterer. Wir nennen sie Körner. So, dies ist ein ..... Dieses Material hat viele Körner, viele Kristalle. Aber schauen Sie sich diesen Kristall an. Er ist pechschwarz, und dieser ist schwarz und dieser ist schwarz und dieser ist schwarz. Dies ist eine Hellfeldbild, aufgenommen im Durchlicht. Und wenn ein Kristall sehr schwarz aussieht, bedeutet das entweder, dass er sehr dick ist und die Probe schlecht ist, aber ich habe die Probe präpariert, also muss sie gut sein. So, die andere Möglichkeit ist, dass er sehr stark beugt, so dass fast keine Intensität im Durchlicht durchkommt. Und ich sagte: "Meine Güte, ich muss mir das Beugungsmuster ansehen." Und das ist das Beugungsmuster. Das ist das ursprüngliche. Das ist es. Nun, ich sah mir das Beugungsmuster an und sagte: "Hmm, was ist das für eine merkwürdige Rotationssymmetrie?" Ich begann zu zählen: "1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, kann nicht sein!" "1, 2, 3, 4, zehnfach?", schrieb ich. Das ist aber merkwürdig. Die andere Sache ist, das dieses Beugungsmuster keine Periodizität mehr hat. Keine Periodizität. Sehen Sie, man nimmt den Abstand von hier nach hier und multipliziert es mit zwei, ganze Zahl, dann kommt man nach hier. Und dort ist nichts. Keine Periodizität, zehnfache Rotationssymmetrie, sehr merkwürdig. So, was Sie hier sehen, ist das Verhältnis jedes Abstands, sagen wir, Abstand von hier nach da, geteilt durch den Abstand von hier nach hier. Diese Entfernung zum Zentrum geteilt durch dies zum Zentrum gibt ihnen den Goldenen Schnitt, was etwas ist, das ich nicht sagen sollte, weil man nicht einfach messen und teilen kann, und eine irrationale Zahl herauskommt. Sie wissen das, nicht wahr? Aber das kommt aus der Theorie. Dies heißt also Goldener Schnitt oder die Fibonacci-Zahl und ich werde Ihnen Herrn Fibonacci in ein paar Minuten vorstellen. So, irrationale Zahlen, zehnfache Rotationssymmetrie, keine Periodizität, schöne neue Welt! Also, am Anfang sagte ich: "Ok, das müssen Kristallzwillinge sein." Ich zeige Ihnen, was Zwillinge sind. Oh, nebenbei gesagt, man kann natürlich die Probe nehmen und drehen und kippen und unterschiedliche Beugungsmuster aus allen Richtungen aufnehmen. Und man erhält eine Sammlung von Beugungsmustern, die tatsächlich die Symmetrie des Kristalls definieren. Und so definiert dieser Satz Beugungsmuster die Symmetrie des Kristalls. Ok, was sind Zwillinge? Dies ist eine Einführung zu Zwillingen. Hier ist ein Bild, eine hochaufgelöste Transmissionselektronenmikroskopaufnahme der Atome im Diamanten. Und manchmal, wenn man Diamanten züchtet, wie ich das gemacht habe, bekommt man Zwillinge in der Struktur. Was sie hier sehen, sind 5 Kristalle 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. 5 unterschiedliche Kristalle. Und da gibt es eine Grenze zwischen den Kristallen. Wir nennen das eine Korngrenze. Aber es ist nicht einfach irgendeine Korngrenze, dies ist eine Zwillingsgrenze. Was bedeutet das? Schauen Sie hier, sehen Sie diese Reihe Atome, sehen Sie diese Reihe Atome. Dies ist ein Spiegelbild von dem hier. Und die Grenze ist der Spiegel. Ok, sehen Sie? Von hier bis hier, und von hier bis hier, und von hier bis hier, und von hier bis hier. Das sind 5 Spiegel. Dies sind Zwillinge, dieses sind zwillingsverwandte Kristalle und in diesem Fall sind es 5. Und ich sagte: "Ok." Sehen Sie, wenn Sie ein Beugungsmuster von diesem Kristall nehmen, dann bekommt man ein periodisches Beugungsmuster. Wenn Sie eins dieser Kristalle nehmen, bekommen Sie ein periodisches Beugungsmuster. Aber wenn man ein Beugungsmuster von allen zusammen aufnimmt, dann bekommt man 5 überlagerte Beugungsmuster. Und das hat natürlich eine fünffache Rotationssymmetrie. Oder in einem anderen Beispiel, das genau hier ist; hier gab es ein weiteres Phänomen. Dies ist ein Kristall in dem Aluminium-Eisen-System. Diese kommen sehr oft vor. Man kann sie leicht finden, wenn man genug Eisen zu Aluminium hat, bekommt man diese Kristalle. Diese Kristalle sind sehr speziell, weil sie zwillingsverwandt sind. Es gibt davon 10, man kann sie zählen, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, alle 10. Wenn man ein Beugungsmuster von hier nimmt, hat man ein periodisches Beugungsmuster und so weiter. Aber wenn man ein Beugungsmuster von allen nimmt, dann bekommt man 10 überlagerte Beugungsmuster mit einer zehnfachen Rotationssymmetrie. Aber dies ist eine Pseudorotationssymmetrie, zehnfach, weil sie von 10 unterschiedlichen Kristallen gewonnen wurde. Und das habe ich gesehen. Also war es das Nächste, was ich am Morgen des 8. April 1982 machte, zu sagen: "Ok, ich finde einfach die Zwillinge, zeichne sie auf und vergesse das." Also führte ich eine Reihe von Experimenten durch. Oh, nebenbei, so sieht das Beugungsmuster von allen zusammen aus. Und wie Sie sehen können, kann man sie zählen. Es hat eine zehnfache Rotationssymmetrie. Aber dies ist eine fünffache oder zehnfache Pseudorotationssymmetrie. Dies ist nur eine davon. Ok. Ich begann, eine Serie von Experimenten durchzuführen. Ich will mich nicht zu lange mit den Experimenten aufhalten. Aber ich möchte erwähnen, dass ein TM, ein Transmissionsmikroskop, ein extrem leistungsstarkes Werkzeug für Entdeckungen ist, weil für das Transmissionselektronenmikroskop jeder Kristall egal welcher Größe ein Einkristall ist, weil die Vergrößerung und die Auflösung so sind, dass man die Atome deutlich sieht. Also ist alles ein Einkristall, das ist nicht der Fall bei der Röntgenstrahlung. Und ich werde darüber sprechen. So, dies ist eine Serie von Dunkelfeldexperimenten. Ich suchte die Zwillinge und konnte sie nicht finden. Also führte ich ein anderes Experiment durch. Dies wird Mikrobeugungsexperiment genannt. Wenn man ein Mikrobeugungsexperiment durchführt, macht man eigentlich das Folgende: Man bringt einen Elektronenstrahl in das Elektronenmikroskop und fokussiert es auf eine kleine Stelle, die kleinste, die man erreichen kann, auf der Probe. Und dann erhält man ein Beugungsmuster dieser sehr, sehr winzigen Stelle. Und wenn sogar dort 1 Zwilling ist, 1 Kristall dort ist, dann hat man ein periodisches Beugungsmuster. Und wenn man den Strahl bewegt oder die Probe unter dem Strahl bewegt, dann bekommt man eine weiteres, und noch eins und alle werden periodisch sein. Das heißt, wenn es dort kleine, winzige Zwillinge gibt. Nun, ich konnte sie nicht finden. Egal wo ich hinschaute, das war das Beugungsmuster. Das letzte Experiment, das ich Ihnen zeigen will. Das habe nicht ich gemacht. Die Leute, die es gemacht haben, sind Kollegen aus Frankreich. Und sie haben es später durchgeführt. Aber es ist ein schönes kleines Experiment. Sehen Sie, die Franzosen hatten ein hochauflösendes Mikroskop. Nun, wir reden über die frühen 80ger Jahre. Wir hatten keins, die Franzosen hatten eins. Und daher führten sie dieses Experiment durch. Was Sie hier sehen ist ein Gitterbild eines quasi-periodischen Materials und das ist das Beugungsmuster, das Sie schon kennen. Was die französischen Kollegen aber machten, war das Folgende: Sie nahmen dieses Bild auf und ließen einen Laser darauf scheinen. Genau diesen Laser. Und sie erhielten ein optisches Beugungsmuster. Und das optische Beugungsmuster ist dieses. So, dies hat auch eine zehnfache Rotationssymmetrie, so wie dies hier. Sie werden sagen: "Ok, was soll's. Beide sind Fouriertransformationen des Bilds, also sollten sie natürlich gleich aussehen." Aha, das ist wahr, aber da gibt es noch etwas. Sehen Sie, sie nahmen ein Beugungsmuster auf von nur dieser Fläche, und verkleinerten sie weiter und weiter und weiter. Dies veränderte sich nicht. Es verschwand natürlich, weil Information fehlte, aber es änderte sich nicht auf atomarer Ebene, keine Zwillinge. So, diese Struktur ist eine inhärente, innere Eigenschaft des Materials. Dies ist das modernere Bild mit hoher Auflösung. Und man sieht diese Muster. Es gibt keine Periodizität. Dort fand ich die erste Person, die mit mir zusammenarbeitete, Professor Ilan Blech, und er schlug ein Modell vor, das erklärt, wie das Material sich bilden kann. Und dann schickten wir eine Veröffentlichung zum Journal of Applied Physics und die Veröffentlichung verhielt sich wie ein Tennisball, der auf eine Wand trifft. Und in Nullkommanichts war er zurück auf meinem Schreibtisch mit einem Brief, der besagte, dass die Veröffentlichung für die Physikergemeinschaft von keinem Interesse wäre. Ok. Und sie empfahlen, sie zu einer Zeitschrift für Metallurgie zu senden. Ich tat das und schickte die Veröffentlichung zu Metallurgical Transactions und sie akzeptierten und veröffentlichten es. Aber sie veröffentlichten es 6 oder 7 Monate später, spät im Jahr 1985. In der Zwischenzeit kam ich zum NBS zurück. Ich traf wieder meinen Gastgeber, Professor John Cahn, und er schlug vor, dass wir eine weitere kurze Veröffentlichung schreiben. Und er setzte Denis Gratias dazu, einen mathematischen Kristallographen aus Frankreich, und wir vier schickten eine weitere Veröffentlichung zu PRL, Physical Review Letters. Sie wurde angenommen und innerhalb eines Monats veröffentlicht. Und als die Veröffentlichung erschien, brach die Hölle aus. Von überall in der Welt begannen Leute mich anzurufen, E-Mails zu schreiben, "Hey Danny, wir haben es, wir haben es. Es ist fantastisch!", weil ich genau erklärt hatte, wie die Materialien hergestellt werden mussten. Sie wiederholten mein Material, meine Experimente, aber begannen sofort, nach anderen Materialien zu suchen und nach und nach fand die Forschergemeinde Hunderte solcher quasi-periodischen Materialien. Ok, das ist also die Veröffentlichung. Nun, lassen Sie mich ein paar Worte über zwanzigflächige Symmetrie verlieren , weil die erste Phase zwanzigflächige Phase genannt wurde. Er war der größte Mathematiker seiner Zeit und wahrscheinlich war er das immer noch fünfhundert Jahre später. Das war, als er jung war. Dies ist das Standbild auf seinem Grab. Sein Grab befindet sich gleich hinter dem schiefen Turm von Pisa. Wenn Sie den schiefen Turm von Pisa besuchen, gehen Sie 20 Meter weiter, dort ist ein Friedhof unter einem Dach, grüßen Sie Herrn Fibonacci von mir. So, Fibonaccis Kaninchen ist sein vielleicht berühmtestes Experiment, Gedankenexperiment. Er sagt das Folgende: Man hat ein weibliches Kaninchen und ihre Freunde besuchen sie und jetzt ist sie trächtig. Und sie bekommt einen Monat später ein Kleines. Und jeden Monat - es gibt da einen hartnäckigen Freund - sie ist jeden Monat trächtig und bekommt ein kleines Kaninchen. Das ist die Mutter. Das kleine Kaninchen, wieder ein Weibchen, es muss geschlechtsreif werden und muss einen Monat wachsen, bevor es sich fortpflanzen kann. So, im zweiten Monat wirft sie ein Kleines, im dritten Monat wirft diese Mutter ein Kleines und dieses Kleine wird geschlechtsreif. Im dritten Monat wirft diese Mutter ein Kleines und dieses Kleine wird geschlechtsreif und diese Mutter wirft ein Kleines. Das ist alles, was Sie wissen müssen. Und man kann diese Serie ewig fortsetzen, wenn man die Regel versteht. Nun will ich Ihnen mehrere Dinge zeigen. Nummer 1, sehen Sie hier. Wir haben das große Kaninchen und das kleine, so groß, klein, groß, groß, klein, groß, klein, groß, groß, klein, groß, groß, klein und so weiter. Es gibt kein Muster, das sich in dieser Serie jemals wiederholt. Kein einziges Muster, das sich wiederholt. Dies ist eine eindimensionale, quasiperiodische Anordnung. Nun, es gibt hier noch andere Regeln. Die Zahl der Kaninchen, die hier für jeden Monat hingeschrieben ist, ist gleich der Zahl der Kaninchen in der vorhergehenden zwei Monaten. Das ist diese Aussage. Und wenn man nach unendlich geht, dann ergibt das Verhältnis der Anzahl der Kaninchen in einem weit entfernten Monat geteilt durch die Zahl der Kaninchen in dem Monat davor die irrationale Nummer Tau, die 1+5^0,5 / 2 ist, die Fibonacci Nummer. Mehr will ich über Fibonacci jetzt nicht sagen. Er veröffentlichte das im Jahr 1202. Quasiperiodizität in zwei Dimensionen, Roger Penrose, ein bedeutender britischer Wissenschaftler unserer Zeit, er entwarf diese zwei Kacheln, mit denen man einen zweidimensionalen Raum fliesen könnte, eine Ebene, quasiperiodisch mit nur 2 Kacheln. Einer dünnen Raute und einer dicken Raute. Und wenn man ein paar Passregeln befolgt, kann man eine Ebene bis zu jeder beliebigen Größe quasiperiodisch fliesen. Kein Muster, das sich wiederholt. Und was ist mit einer dreidimensionalen Quasiperiodizität? Nun, hier ist ein Kristall, der quasiperiodisch ist, und man kann dies beim System Magnesium-Zink-Cer klar sehen, fünffache Kristallflächen. Dies ist ein quasiperiodisches Material. Nun will ich Ihnen ganz kurz etwas sehr Schönes zeigen. Man kann das Folgende machen. Man nimmt einen Raum hoher Dimension, 2 Dimensionen, 6 Dimensionen. Was immer man will. Und in diesem Fall ist es ein zweidimensionaler Raum. Sie können in einschneiden und ein Band in ihm erstellen und die Atome oder die mathematischen Punkte innerhalb des Gitters projizieren. So, was haben wir hier? Wir haben ein mathematisches Gitter. Jeder in dem Bereich hat einen kleinen Punkt, der keine Dimension hat. In jedem Schnittpunkt ist es ein mathematischer Punkt. Wir können jetzt einen Schnitt machen. Wir produzieren diesen Schnitt. Aber diese Richtung ist nicht irgendeine Richtung. Der Tangens dieses Alpha ist die Fibonacci-Zahl Tau, die eine irrationale Zahl ist. Nun, denken Sie nach. Was bedeutet das? Wenn ich hier in einem Gitterpunkt anfange, wird diese Linie nie einen anderen Punkt treffen, weil es eine irrationale Zahl ist. Wenn ich einen Punkt träfe, wäre der Tangens eine rationale Zahl. Aber er ist eine irrationale Zahl. So, diese Linie trifft einen Punkt, sonst nie jemals einen anderen Punkt. Nun kann man alle die Punkte innen nehmen und sie auf diese Linie projizieren. Und sehen Sie, was passiert. Achten Sie auf die Entfernung. Groß, groß, klein, groß, groß, klein, groß, klein. Ah, Fibonacci-Kaninchen! Quasiperiodizität auf einer Linie. Und wenn Sie am Abend ein wenig Zeit haben, können Sie 6 Dimensionen nehmen, machen Sie einen Schnitt und projizieren sie ihn auf einen dreidimensionalen Raum. Und dann haben Sie eine quasiperiodische Anordnung in drei Dimensionen und Sie haben einen neuen Quasikristall geschaffen. Es hängt davon ab, welches Muster Sie in Ihrem periodischen 6-dimensionalen Raum nahmen. Nur, wenn Sie Zeit haben. Ok. Hier ist noch etwas. Das habe ich vorhin gemacht. Ok, die Tangens ist diese Fibonacci-Zahl. Nun bringe ich rote Linien. Ah, die roten Linien sind fast, fast wie die schwarzen Linien, aber nicht ganz, weil sie sich in diesem Punkt treffen. Und hier in diesem Punkt treffen sie sich. So, der Tangens ist dies geteilt durch das, das ist 11. Sie können das zählen, 11 geteilt durch 7, das ist eine rationale Zahl. Und dies ist eine periodische Anordnung, eine periodische Linie. Warum? Weil hier ein Punkt ist, und hier ein weiterer, und da wird es einen weiteren geben und noch einen und noch einen. Ein großes Muster, aber Periodizität. Es gibt Kristalle, die auf der Basis der roten Linie gebaut sind. Und sie sind fast quasiperiodisch. Wir nennen sie Approximanten. Und sie haben Eigenschaften, die benachbart sind, ähnlich, aber nicht ganz wie quasiperiodische Materialien. Nun zur Geschichte. Von 1982 bis 1984 habe ich jedem, der bereit war zuzuhören, meine Geschichte erzählt. Und Leute haben versucht, mir beizubringen, dass das unmöglich ist, und sie haben Bücher auf meinen Schreibtisch gelegt, verlegen lächelnd und so weiter. Und ich sagte, mein Material ist nicht in dem Buch. Die Reaktion war zwischen einer Ermutigung..... Mein Gastgeber, John Cahn, sagte: "Danny, das Material sagt uns irgendwas und ich fordere Dich heraus, herauszufinden, was es ist." Das war eine gute Antwort. Es gab schlechte Antworten. Und einige Zeit lang fühlte ich mich einsam und nicht so wohl. Wenn Sie sehen wollen, wie ich mich fühlte, etwa so. Ok. So, das war am Anfang. Im Jahr 1984 war ich nicht länger alleine. Ilan Blech kam dazu, John Cahn kam dazu, Denis Gratias und nach der ersten Veröffentlichung waren wir eine wachsende avantgardistische Gemeinde von Wissenschaftlern, die quasiperiodische Materialien untersuchten. Neue entdeckten. Es war eine erstaunliche Erfahrung, weil die Zahl dieser Forscher täglich wuchs und es war wunderbar. Ich war also nicht alleine. Aber die Internationale Kristallographische Union sagte mir und der Gemeinschaft: "Wir brauchen Röntgenbeugungsresultate. Elektronenmikroskopie wird nicht akzeptiert. Bringen Sie uns Röntgenbeugungsresultate." Da steckt Geschichte dahinter, weil von Laue und das Präzisionsinstrument der Röntgenbeugung sie hinderte, irgendetwas anderes zu akzeptieren. Und im Jahr 1987 gaben mir Kollegen aus Frankreich und Japan dieses Beugungsmuster. Dies ist ein Lauesches Röntgenbeugungsmuster von quasiperiodischen Materialien, fünffach, schön, fünffach, dreifach, zweifach, ausgezeichnet. Ich zeigte diese Resultate in Perth, Australien, beim Treffen der Internationalen Kristallographischen Union im Jahr 1987. Und dann sagte die Gemeinschaft: "Ok Danny. Jetzt hast Du etwas." Und sie schufen einen Ausschuss, der Kristall neu definierte und Sie haben die Definition vorhin gesehen. So, dies war eine zweite Welle der Akzeptanz. Aber wenn Sie glauben, dass es zu Ende war, dann nicht so schnell, weil es von 1987 bis 1994 noch eine mächtige Opposition durch einen der bedeutendsten Wissenschaftler des 20. Jahrhunderts, Professor Linus Pauling, gab. Und er sagte das Folgende. Er sagte auf Bühnen wie dieser hier und anderen: "Danny Shechtman erzählt Unsinn." Er sagte: "Es gibt keine Quasikristalle, es gibt nur Quasiwissenschaftler." Und er war nicht alleine, weil er der Pate der American Chemical Society war und sie standen hinter ihm. Und ich kann sie verstehen. Hier dieser bedeutende Star, Linus Pauling, und dort, wie hieß er noch? Ich meine, wem würden Sie wohl glauben? Aber es gab eine Menge Kommunikation. Wir haben keine Zeit dafür. Aber im Jahr 1994 starb Professor Pauling, und mit ihm starb der Widerstand und das war das. Ich möchte ein paar Namen erwähnen. Nein, es ist nicht komisch, wenn jemand stirbt, es ist eine Tragödie. Bevor ich aufhöre, möchte ich ein paar Namen erwähnen, die einen fruchtbaren Beitrag geliefert haben. Roger Penrose, Alan Mackay. Ich erwähne Roger Penrose, Alan Mackay nahm Roger Penroses Kacheln, führte eine Fouriertransformation durch und erhielt ein scharfes Beugungsmuster im reziproken Raum. Und er sagte: "Roger Penroses Kacheln können sich in scharfe Punkte beugen." Das war wunderbar. Zusätzlich auch meine Kollegen Ilan Blech, Denis Gratias und John Cahn. Sie veröffentlichten das erste und das zweite Paper mit mir. Und last, but not least, Dov Levine und Paul Steinhardt. Dov Levine ist jetzt ein Professor am Technion, Paul Steinhardt ist in Princeton, ein Professor dort. Und sie schlugen ein Kachelmodell vor, das auf Roger Penrose und Alan Mackay basiert und das nun das vorherrschende Modell ist, wie Atome in einem quasiperiodischen Material angeordnet sind. Während Ordnung synonym mit Periodizität war, nun wissen wir, dass Ordnung periodisch sein kann, es kann quasiperiodisch sein und es ist offen für andere Entdeckungen, das ist großartig. Nun, bevor ich aufhöre, will ich die folgende Frage stellen, weil Sie keine Zeit haben werden, Fragen zu stellen. Warum wurden quasiperiodische Materialen nie vor 1982 entdeckt? Ist es, weil sie sehr selten sind? Oder weil sie nicht stabil sind? Oder weil sie schwierig herzustellen sind? Warum hat niemand ... Forscher untersuchten Hunderttausende von Kristallen, und niemand sah jemals quasiperiodische Materialien? Warum? Nun, sind sie selten? Ah, überhaupt nicht. Dies ist ein Auszug, kleiner Auszug aller quasiperiodischen Materialien, die nur auf Aluminium basieren. Und es gibt viele andere. Es gibt Hunderte. Nein, das ist nicht der Grund. Vielleicht sind sie nicht stabil? Ah, sie sind es normalerweise. Alle sind bei Raumtemperatur, wo man sie untersucht, stabil. Einige von ihnen sind stabil und schmelzen zusammen, wenn man sie erhitzt. So, nein, das ist nicht der Grund. Sind sie schwierig herzustellen? Ah, überhaupt nicht. Man kann sie durch Guss herstellen, durch schnelle Verfestigung, durch Züchten von Einkristallen, Elektronenabscheidung, CVD, PVD. Man kann sie auf jedem Weg herstellen, mit dem man irgendeine Metalllegierung herstellt. So, was war der Grund? Und das ist mein letztes Bild. Nummer 1: Quasiperiodische Materialien hätten mit TEM entdeckt werden sollen. Es gab kein anderes Instrument, mit dem quasiperiodische Materialien entdeckt werden konnten, weil sie klein waren. Sie waren 2 Mikrometer groß und so weiter. Und als wir die Zusammensetzung kannten, benötigten wir drei Jahre, um sie groß genug für die Röntgenbeugung zu züchten. So, sie konnten nur durch die Transmissionselektronenmikroskopie entdeckt werden. Das ist also die Leistungsfähigkeit der Transmissionselektronenmikroskopie. Aber das ist nicht genug, weil man professionell sein muss. Man muss ein Experte sein, und man muss alle Techniken benutzen können, man muss die Kristallographie kennen, und man muss wissen, wie man die fantastischen Möglichkeiten eines TEM nutzen kann. Und ich bedauere es zu sagen, dass sehr wenige Studenten in der ganzen Welt zu Experten in der Transmissionselektronenmikroskopie werden. Obwohl Millionen das Elektronenmikroskop als ein wunderbares Vergrößerungsglas benutzen. Aber sie werden nicht zu Experten. Und dies ist meine Botschaft an Sie. Wenn Sie in Ihrer Karriere erfolgreich sein wollen, werden Sie ein Experte in etwas, genau jetzt, wenn Sie promovieren oder andere Abschlüsse machen. Werden Sie Experte, und ich verspreche Ihnen, wenn Sie Experte auf irgendeinem Gebiet werden, werden Sie eine wunderbare Karriere haben. Wählen Sie etwas aus, das Sie gerne machen, werden Sie Experte und Sie werden eine wunderbare Karriere haben. Wir haben leider keine Zeit, das weiter zu besprechen. Und dann muss man Beharrlichkeit zeigen, wenn man etwas entdeckt hat. Was bedeutet das? Lassen Sie nicht los! Hier ist eine kurze Geschichte, wo dieser eine Student in Europa mein Beugungsmuster vor mir sah. Woher weiß ich das? Weil ich es von seinem Professor gehört habe. Und sein Professor erzählt mir das Folgende: Ich sichtete für meine Studenten eine Reihe von Fotoplatten der Elektronenmikroskopie und vor Dir hat jemand schon Dein Bild der Elektronenbeugung aufgenommen. Ich rief meinen damaligen Studenten an, nun schon ein paar Jahre promoviert, und er ist ein großer Manager irgendwo und sagte zu ihm: "Wissen Sie, Sie haben das Beugungsmuster vor Danny gesehen?" Und er sagte: wenn ich es Ihnen gesagt hätte, hätten Sie gewollt, dass ich noch zwei weitere Jahre an meinem PhD arbeite." Hartnäckigkeit, nicht loslassen. Wenn man etwas findet, dann wie ein Rottweiler zubeißen und nicht loslassen. Man muss an sich glauben. Aber wenn man ein Experte ist, tut man das. Man wird der schlimmste Kritiker von sich selbst. Und dann muss man einiges an Ausdauer zeigen, weil man Schwierigkeiten begegnen wird, aber man muss die Kraft und den Willen haben, Rückgrat zu zeigen und zu sagen: "Ich weiß, dass ich Recht habe, weil ich ein Experimentator bin und ein Fachmann. Und ich bin bereit, zuzuhören, aber ich höre nicht auf Theoretiker, die mir basierend auf einem alten Paradigma erzählen, dass das nicht sein kann. Kommen Sie zurück mit etwas Substantiellerem. Dann können wir reden." Vielen, vielen Dank.

Abstract

QUASI-PERIODIC MATERIALS DISCOVERY – THE ROLE OF TEM

Crystallography has been one of the mature sciences. Over the years, the modern science of crystallography that started by experimenting with x-ray dif-fraction from crystals in 1912, has developed a major paradigm – that all crystals are ordered and periodic. Indeed, this was the basis for the definition of “crystal” in textbooks of crystallography and x-ray diffraction. Based upon a vast number of experimental data, constantly improving research tools, and deepening theoretical understanding of the structure of crystalline materials no revolution was anticipated in our understanding the atomic order of solids.

However, such revolution did happen with the discovery of the Icosahedral phase, the first quasi-periodic crystal (QC) in 1982, and its announcement in 1984 [1, 2]. QCs are ordered materials, but their atomic order is quasiperiodic rather than periodic, enabling formation of crystal symmetries, such as icosa-hedral symmetry, which cannot exist in periodic materials.

QCs are quite abundant - hundreds of quasi-periodic crystals have been dis-covered by now. They are easy to make – practically all the techniques for metallic alloy making can produce QCs, and are made of simple frequently use elements – aluminum, iron, chromium and manganese to name a few. However it took 70 years, from 1912 to 1982 to discover the first QC.

The reason is TEM. The tool of choice in crystal structural analysis was x-ray diffraction. Indeed, the science was names "X-Ray Crystallography". Although TEM is a powerful tool for the study of crystal structure, it was not recognized as such by the community of x-ray crystallographers.

QCs had to be discovered by TEM, for the first QCs made by rapid solidifica-tion were small – a few microns in size at the most. It took the QC community 3 years to grow large enough QCs for x-ray diffraction to be performed on a single QC. This came only in 1987.

The versatility of TEM that provided detailed contrast analysis as well as lattice imaging made the difference and enabled the discovery.

This talk will outline the discovery of QCs and describe the important role of electron microscopy as a prime discovery tool.
