Carbon capture and sequestration of CO₂ (CCS) from both point sources and the atmosphere is a critical component for mitigating climate change. However, before widescale adoption of CCS, the costs need to be significantly reduced. After reviewing the need for CO₂ capture from both point sources and direct air capture, I will describe a novel electrochemical approach that may lower the energy cost of CO₂ capture by > 4x compared to previous methods. The capital investment and other operating costs are also expected to be greatly reduced. My talk will be aimed at scientists not familiar with electrochemistry ideas and methods and will emphasize the basic underlying physics of a new type of electrochemistry.
