Abstract
New digital technologies offer exciting possibilities for the future of work, but the record is not good. We have a choice where to direct new technology but looking at the record, we find increasing inequalities, dissatisfaction from work, and in the United States even falling life expectancies. Global warming is accelerating, and social media, probably the most widespread application of digital technologies so far, are increasingly being used for surveillance and political manipulation. Where is this leading to and what is the future of work? It is important to use new technologies to achieve good work, but how? We argue that governments, companies and workers have an important role to play in improving this dismal record with digital technologies.
