How to Detect Gravitational Waves (2021) - Barry C. Barish

Abstract

Gravitational waves are ripples in spacetime that have been created by accelerating masses. The recent detection of two black holes colliding by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Detector (LIGO) required a sensitivity to such distortions of the order of one thousandth the size of a proton. How LIGO was able to achieve such incredible sensitivities, how it is becoming even more sensitive, as well as future prospects will all be discussed.
